Getting Your Windows Ready Before the Snowbirds Come Back
October means one thing in the Coachella Valley: season is coming. Our part-time neighbors are packing up and heading back to Palm Springs, La Quinta, Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage, and the valley is about to get busy again.
But after months of 110-degree days, summer dust storms and sprinklers running every morning, most homes have windows that need some attention. Here’s what to look for, and how to get your home ready.
Summer dust and monsoon grime
Summer winds and monsoon storms leave a film of fine dust on every window, slider and railing. Rain on top of dust turns into dried, muddy spots that don’t come off with a quick wipe. Scrubbing it dry can scratch the glass, so it’s best cleaned with plenty of water and the right tools.
Hard water spots from sprinklers
This is the big one in the desert. Our water is full of minerals, and when sprinklers hit your windows day after day, those minerals bake onto the glass in the summer heat. Early on, they wipe away. Left for a season, they etch into the glass and turn into permanent-looking white stains.
The good news: in most cases, those stains can be removed with professional glass restoration, without replacing the glass. And a quick sprinkler adjustment now can keep them from coming back.

Screens, tracks and frames
Sliding doors that stick, screens full of dust and tracks packed with dirt make even clean glass look tired. A full service includes cleaning the screens, vacuuming and wiping the tracks, and wiping down the frames and sills.
Don’t forget the inside
Mirrors, shower doors, glass railings and interior windows collect a summer’s worth of dust too, especially in a closed-up house. Shower glass with hard water buildup can be restored the same way outside windows can.
